Voter Initiatives on the November 2012 Election Ballot

Proposition 30 - Governor’s Initiative: Schools & Local Public Safety Protection Act

Summary: Governor, the Courage Campaign and the California Faculty Association have combined their efforts. This initiative Increases income tax on single earners earning more than $250K a yr and joint filers earning more than $500K for 7 years and includes a 3% income tax on earners of $1 million or more. A quarter cent sales tax is imposed for 4 years. The Governor intends to use the new revenue to fund public schools, local public safety and other vital services.

Who votes: Every registered and eligible voter in California will have an opportunity to vote.

When: The November 6, 2012 General Election.

Proposition 38 - Our Children, Our Future: Local School and Early Education Investment and Bond Debt Reduction Act

Summary: This measure imposes an increase in income tax on taxpayers earning more than $40k a year in taxable income to secure $10-11 Billion in revenue to fund public education.  The income tax increase would last for 12 years with over 60% of funds proposed to go directly to students and their school sites.

Who votes: Every registered and eligible voter in California will have an opportunity to vote.

When: The November 6, 2012 General Election.

What if Both Propositions Pass?

Only the initiative with the most votes would become law. Both initiatives cannot be implemented.

 

LAUSD’s Parcel Tax Initiative: Student Program Protection and Instructional Improvement Compact

UPDATE:  At the request of Superintendent Deasy, the Board of Education has withdrawn the LAUSD Parcel Tax Initiative from the November 6, 2012 General Election.  The Parcel Tax Initiative will be placed on an upcoming ballot in 2013.
