Welcome to LAUSD's Budget Realities Website

Here you will find up to date information on the District’s budget, and the ongoing challenges we face. Each year since 1985, California's spending on public education has declined from the national average.  Today, California schools rank at the bottom of almost every national ranking in terms of spending and supports for children.

LAUSD is Facing its 5th Consecutive Year of Deficits

  • Our deficits since 2008-09 add up to nearly $2.7 billion

  • 8,000 valued employees have lost their jobs in the last four years

  • Over 6,500 valued employees could lose their jobs next year

  • California ranks 46th in the nation in K-12 spending per student*

LAUSD's 2012-13 Deficit

As of March 8, 2012, LAUSD's deficit is $390 million. We face a deficit whenever our projected costs exceed our revenue. Here's how the deficit is calculated:

  2012-13 Projected Costs

- 2012-13 Revenue

  2012-13 Deficit

Here is how the deficit has changed since February 2012:

This change in the deficit is primarily due to the District's advocacy efforts at the state level. The change is also due to updated District revenue and expenditure information. Click here to read the District's plan (as of March 2012) to address the remaining $390 million deficit.
